Taking care of children with cardiac conditions during a heatwave

For children with cardiac conditions, the key heat-wave priorities are hydration, cooling, and activity restriction, because children with heart disease can be more vulnerable to dehydration and heat-related illness.

Practical advice

  •      Offer fluids regularly rather than waiting for thirst, and keep water available during play.
  •      Avoid the hottest part of the day; plan outdoor time for early morning or evening, and prefer shade or cool indoor spaces.
  •      Dress the child in loose, light-coloured clothing, and use hats/sunscreen outdoors.
  •      Reduce exertion, especially vigorous play or sports, because heat stress adds extra strain on the cardiovascular system.

Warning signs

Watch for unusual tiredness, dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing, or a fast heart rate.  If these occur, move the child to a cool place, start cooling measures, and seek urgent medical advice; severe symptoms need emergency care.

Home setup

Keep rooms cool with curtains/blinds closed in the day, ventilation at night, and air conditioning or fans when appropriate.  Make sure carers, schools, and relatives know the child is at higher risk and should be monitored closely during heat waves.
